million dollar homepage and pixel pages

The future of the million dollar page.

When the Million Dollar Homepage launched it was unique and captured the media’s interest. As a result this generated lots of traffic to the site and where there’s traffic advertising usually follows.

At the moment the hype is still relatively new so traffic is still high for the pioneer pixel pages. Advertisers are willing to pay for advertising as they know they will get traffic from their investment.

As the initial buzz dies down and the pioneer pages become more cluttered fewer advertisers will be willing to invest. The advertisers return on investment will diminish and so new advertisers will lose interest.

The pioneer pixel pages will continue to generate a background level of traffic as they have built up a huge number of back links. When any new article mentions pixel pages they will more than likely mention the originals and so will not die out completely.

The question we need to ask is, are pixel pages going to become a part of the internet furniture like banner ads or will the die out as a novelty?

Surely the market will only bare a certain level of pixel page sites before supply outstrips demand. This will surely leave the latecomers high and dry.

To survive new pixel pages are going to have to offer something different, something that will keep visitors returning. There are a few sites that have taken the next step in pixel page technology and integrated pixel advertising into their established sites.

OhGizmo is the first site that I am aware of that has integrated a pixel banner into their blog. They are offering the opportunity for more targeted pixel advertising with the premise that this is an economically viable advertising model. The premise being that visitors will come to see the content, this being more sustainable thus offering advertisers a more assured long term ROI.

Another example of this is in action at Start.com.my blog, another technology blog. In this instance they offer a much smaller 100 x 100 pixel box to advertise in. This is divided up into 100 individual 10 x 10 advertising blocks. The author of the site terms this type of pixel advertising as 1mad or 1 million dollar ad. You can download the PHP script from the site to install on your own blog or website.

Over time as the pixel market matures I am sure we will see other pixel advertising formats emerge. The future of pixel page and Million Dollar homepage pixel pages entering the market at such a late stage is doubtful unless they can offer a similar sustainable source of traffic for their advertisers.
